Elevating the Visuals – Texture and Model Overhaul
Feb 23, 2024
Greetings strategists!
It's been a while since I focused on the visual side of Empires and Embers. After getting all those core gameplay mechanics working, it's time to give the world a much-needed visual upgrade. Let's talk about the exciting changes I've got planned!
Goodbye Placeholders, Hello Detail
Simple textures and basic models were fine for prototyping, but they're not going to cut it for the final experience. Here's how I'm overhauling those visuals:
- Higher Resolution: No more blurry textures! I'm creating new assets with much finer detail. Every blade of grass, every rock will contribute to a richer scene.
- Material Variety: Instead of the same flat look on everything, I'm adding materials with realistic properties. Shiny metal, rough-hewn wood – this brings the world to life.
- Biomes with Character: Each region will have its own identity through its textures. Think vibrant colors for a rainforest, parched and cracked textures in a desert – visual storytelling at its best!
The Challenges (and Joys) of a Solo Dev
This is definitely a passion project, and here's some of what I'm grappling with:
- Performance Balance: Detailed visuals are amazing, but they can't tank the frame rate. I'm learning optimization techniques and ways to deliver beauty without sacrificing a smooth experience.
- Style Cohesion: Every new tree, building, or texture needs to feel like it belongs in the world of Empires and Embers. Keeping that visual consistency is a challenge I love.
- Your Feedback: As a solo dev, the community is vital! I might share progress shots or have polls to help me design those special landmark features.
Get Ready for a Visual Feast
Revamping the visuals of an entire game takes time. But rest assured, Empires and Embers is going to become more and more beautiful with every step. My aim is to create a world you'll love exploring!
Stay tuned for screenshots and updates as the new visuals come to life. May your conquests be ever more glorious!
